The Closet
WPBC provides opportunities for people with low incomes to buy good used clothing and housewares in order to meet the necessities of their lives. The Closet provides clothing to individuals referred by sponsoring churches, social services and other nonprofit organizations at no cost.
WPBC has been serving on the board and supplying volunteers for 35 years. This community thrift shop has been an important source of clothing and home furnishings for people of little means. Its tremendous volume generates thousands of dollars annually which are dispersed to many local charitable organizations. Leomia Brunson, a WPBC member since 1975, was the assistant manager at The Closet from 1980 to 1987 and then manager until her retirement in 2004. Visit the Closet website www.theclosetofgreaterherndon.org to see what are WPBC’s assigned days in order to volunteer to help out.
Cornerstones – formerly Reston Interfaith
WPBC joins with other faith communities to help local the neediest people through the organization known as CORNERSTONES. As one of the founding members of Cornerstone, WPBC actively participates in many of its projects, for example: In 2016 WPBC donated 20 backpacks for “Backpacks for Kids” in the Fairfax County Schools; $3,000 worth of food annually to the Food Pantry; and $500 worth of toiletries to the homeless shelter and Hypothermia described below. Dr. Sharon Davis represents WPBC on the Board of Directors. A special offering at the WPBC community-wide Good Friday service benefits Cornerstones.

Hypothermia Project
WPBC advocates for and serves homeless people in the area. Organized by Cornerstones, WPBC provides sack lunches and hot meals on winter dates assigned by Cornerstones. WPBC members gather at church to create tasty sandwiches. They are taken with the hotmeal to the homeless shelter and social services center. Contact the Church office at 703-471-5225 or Cornerstones’ website: http://www.cornerstonesva.org
GOOD WORKS SUNDAY
Good Works Sunday illustrates vividly the strength of WPBC’s commitment to interfaith relationships and activities. Once a year WPBC joins Jewish, Muslim, Unitarian and Protestant faith communities to provide a special meal to residents of Fellowship House at Lake Anne at the same time other “good works” are being accomplished elsewhere in the community. WPBC affirms that “good works” are a product of many faiths.
MYANMAR/BURMA
WPBC directs resources to meet the needs of people in the immediate neighborhood and at the same time WPBC recognizes its global responsibility. In this spirit WPBC created a “Sister Relationship” with the Hakha Baptist church in Chin State, Myanmar also known as Burma. Prayers are regularly offered and news between WPBC and Hakha Baptist Church is shared. Financial aid is offered through One Great Hour of Sharing and International Ministries of the American Baptist Churches.
If you are unable to volunteer, there are still many opportunities to support charitable organizations by your monetary donations. Check out our affiliates HERE
